You’re about to be a Senior in high school. You’re excited about all the parties and dances. You’re excited about any special Senior privileges. You’re excited to finally be leaving and starting something new.
Even though being a high school Senior is one of the coolest moments you’d ever imagined, it’s also a time in which you need to think about your future. Once I mention that word “future” your hands become clammy, and your breathing gets short. It’s a daunting thought, but it doesn’t have to be so scary.
Here are three ways in which you can make college admissions that much easier:
1) Write your college essay before school starts
You’re going to be looking over that essay many times before January. You’re going to iron every wrinkle, add sentences, and delete sentences. You may even change it entirely. However, if you already have something to work with before the chaos of school starts it’ll make the application process that much easier. And remember a first draft is a first draft, NBD.
2) Make a list
Make a list of all the schools you want to apply to and any specific requirements that are different from the common app. You’re going to want to know when their deadline is and if they have any additional essays they want you to submit.
3) You will go to college
No matter what happens remember that you WILL go to college one way or another. The fact according to the National Center for Education Statistics, “in fall 2015, some 20.2 million students are expected to attend American colleges and universities, constituting an increase of about 4.9 million since fall 2000”. You may start at a community college or may go to a four-year university. Wherever you go, remember that it’s OK. The fact is as long as you achieve a Bachelor’s from any university you will receive a median of 66% higher pay than someone without a college degree (National Center for Education Statistics).
