Tips for Writing Successful College Essays: Part 1
Whether it's your first or fifth semester in college, writing college-level essays can be a challenge. Of course you want a good grade, but where do you even start? Fear not! By following these simple college essay tips, you'll be well on your way to a better essay (and a better grade) in no time.
1. Live and Breathe the Rubric
One of the best college essay tips you can follow is that of breaking out the assignment sheet or rubric before you get started with your writing. After all, the rubric your professor gave you should have all the criteria listed that you're expected to follow in order to receive a good grade.
Carefully read through your assignment sheet, and then based on what you read, create a checklist of the things you'll need to do to receive the best possible score. This could include anything from specific questions you need to answer about your topic to a particular formatting style you're expected to follow.
2. Take Advantage of Writing Help
Once you've got a full understanding of your writing assignment, you'll be in a better place to get started in brainstorming and outlining your essay. If you have a hard time getting started on written assignments, consider checking to see if your campus has a free writing center or writing tutors available for you to work with.
Consulting with a writing tutor can be a great way to work on structuring your ideas or even just brainstorming some topics. And contrary to popular belief, most campus writing centers don't require you to have a full draft of your essay already done; just bring in your assignment sheet and whatever ideas you've got so far.
