College Admissions: Dos and Don'ts for Your Application
So, it's come time to start thinking about college admissions, and you've got a couple of schools that you're interested in. You've decided to fill out applications to these schools, but you know you've only got one shot, so you want to put your best foot forward. There are a few tips to keep in mind as you prepare to start applying to various colleges.
DO Give Yourself Plenty of Time
Colleges can vary greatly when it comes to their application deadlines, so be sure to research the deadlines for the colleges you're interested in and mark them down. Don't wait until the last minute to begin working on your application, especially if you're required to write essays or request letters of recommendation as part of your application materials.
DON'T Pester the Admissions Office
Once you have submitted your applications, allow some time to receive a decision from the admissions office. It can take weeks or even months for some schools to make their decisions and notify the applicants. Even if you aren't admitted to a school you applied to, you should still receive some kind of correspondence from them. Be patient, though; do not call their admissions office to check on the status of your application. They will not be able to tell you whether or not you were admitted over the phone.
DO Explore Assistance Options
Finally, if you're nervous about the cost of application fees at the schools you're applying to (some of them can be quite high), don't be afraid to research some assistance options. There are many programs that you can apply for that may be able to cover some or all of your application fees as a way of making the application process easier on you.
